Until recently there were no options for neck rejuvenation or for removal of aging signs. Surgery was the main option and it could only remove the excess of skin. Other available methods gave very poor results followed by numerous complications and a long recovery time. That is why the neck was always a painful issue, until methods and treatments which efficiently and safely remove aging signs appeared.
Due to sun exposure, neck is of a red-brownish color, and the skin is coarse and rough to the touch. The redness is created by numerous capillaries due to long sun exposure. Many blame perfume for neck changes. Furthermore, the neck is of lower quality and is wrinkled, creased and not so attractive looking. Parallel wrinkles appear along the middle part of the neck. Vertically there are wrinkles caused by the enhanced muscle contraction. One's neck and fists are two main areas which betray your real age. Oftentimes in the rejuvenating process it is necessary to decrease the dewlap and accentuate the lower jaw edge.
This is not a simple task, because the skin is very thin and sensitive because of damages done by sun exposure. All procedures and corrections must be done carefully and gently because scars can easily appear, as well as complications and a need for long term healing. An ideal plan for neck rejuvenation would start with the removal of redness, followed by wrinkle removal and improvements of the skin quality and appearance. The red-brownish skin color should be removed by optical energy used by lasers, IPL devices and AFT treatments. The treatments improve the appearance and the quality of skin. Fractional lasers are a big help because they replace the damaged skin completely and tighten the skin. Radio-waves help with skin tightening. With hyaluronic acid we reduce wrinkles. Botox is used for wrinkle reduction which were created by muscle contraction. Aquaphoresis or mesotherapy are used for injecting rejuvenating substances.
For a successful neck rejuvenation one method or treatment is not enough, but a combination is advised. Because of skin sensitivity in the neck area more treatments are needed, depending on the level and type of skin damage, in average it takes 2-5 treatments.
If dealing with severe cases (lots of excess skin and sagging) it is necessary to reach out for other measures. Surgery was along with liposuction a method of choice. Recently laser lipolysis is becoming more and more popular and is replacing the above mentioned methods. Today, neck liposuction is really rare.
Optical energy, which removes skin damage caused by sun exposure: redness, dark brown pigmentation, tiny wrinkles and creases is used. The goal is to darken the pigmentation which will then be removed completely within 3-10 days. After the treatment the skin is gentle, soft and elastic, it has a different appearance and those tiny wrinkles are gone. If a pigmentation removal is performed some recovery time might be needed, because there will be visible signs of pigmentation that can be covered up by a shawl. If there is no pigmentation on the neck no recovery time is needed.
Neodymium Yag laser
The treatment is used to damage the skin, which alerts the organism to repair the damages and produce new tissue. In that way skin is rejuvenated, minor wrinkles are removed and the skin is tightened. The result is not visible immediately after the treatment but gets better daily within the next 9 months which is how long it takes to see the final result. That much time is also needed to remove the damages done by the laser and to create new tissue. No recovery time is needed.
Pulsed Dye laser
The laser removes redness, pigmentation, rejuvenates the skin and creates new collagen. After the treatment smaller short term bruises are possible and a few days of recovery might be needed, but usually the mentioned bruises can be covered easily by make up.
The goal is to achieve the same effect as with the Neodymium Yag laser but instead of optical energy electromagnetic energy is used. The treatment has a stronger effect on skin tightening and wrinkle reduction in comparison to the Neodymium Yag laser. The final result is visible in 6 to 9 months after the last treatment. It is recommended to perform this treatment in combination with a facial treatment. No recovery time is needed.
Electrical energy is used to inject certain substances through the skin in purpose of rejuvenation. At the same time skin tension is improved. With skin tightening the wrinkles are reduced. It is recommended to perform this treatment in combination with a facial treatment.
The role of botox in rejuvenation treatments is to relax the platysma muscles which at certain movements provoke stripy vertical neck bulges which span from the lower jaw towards the neck. Usually this occurs with straining oneself. At the same time, botox is used for relaxing the vertical neck creases. If needed, to achieve the best of results, the lower jaw and the neck can be treated at the same time. One treatment is needed and it is painless and asks for no recovery period. The effect will in average last for 4 to 10 months, although sometimes even longer.
The goal is to inject Co2 with the tinniest of needles, these injections are painless and do not cause discomfort. The goal is to provoke, by Co2 injections, the development of new collagen which reduces the transversal wrinkles and tightens the skin. With this treatment the quality and appearance of the neck skin is significantly improved. No recovery is needed.
This is the basic structural ingredient of our skin and it decreases in quantity with age. Hyaluronic acid is responsible for linking water which makes the skin tense and elastic. By loosing hyaluronic acid skin becomes wrinkled, creased and loses its elasticity. Tiny needles are used to inject the acid under one's skin. Minor to moderately accentuated wrinkles can be removed in this way. Furthermore, the goal is to treat the whole surface of the neck, which leaves the skin tense, elastic and soft.
The laser causes microscopic damages with optical energy, which are then ejected from the organism and replaced with new connective tissue. This replacement process takes 6 to 9 months and therefor the result is not immediately visible. After the treatment the skin will be dark red for 2 to 5 days. The non-ablative fractional laser does not damage the skin surface and significantly improves the quality and the look of one's skin. Ablative fractional lasers (erbium, Co2) damage the skin and have a tightening effect on one's skin while reducing wrinkles. 1 to 3 treatments are needed.
The treatment is based on the same principle as the ablative fractional laser treatment, only instead of optical electromagnetic energy is used. This treatment has a strong skin tightening effect. Recovery takes 1 to 3 days after the treatment because the skin gets dark red.
